This project challenged me to reimagine the thematic design of United States currency by creating new visuals for the ten and fifty-dollar bills. I was inspired by the way that fashion reflects the cultural and historical shifts in American societies over time.
The redesigned ten-dollar bill depicts the World War I era with a specific focus on the uniforms worn by women, who for the first time in U.S history, were eligible to serve in the military.
The fifty-dollar bill features denim overalls, commonly worn by black protestors during the Civil Rights Movement, This attire was most commonly associated with blue-collar-working men, so when worn in an act of protest, it made a powerful statement against the racial injustice in America.
Rather than spotlighting well-known historical figures, I chose to feature photos of everyday individuals whose names may not be widely recognized. I intended for this to symbolize the collective power of Americans to fight for their own rights.
The technical design requirements were to explore new layouts and color schemes without being limited by the existing design of U.S. bills. The only constraints were to include all required text, to develop a flexible layout that could be applied across all bills, and to have a strong theme.
